Purpose of this Blog

Why I wanted to start this blog...
To reach out to those who are just beginning this journey & perhaps help simplify it for them.  Also, to give encouragement to them through my stories and successes on our way to recovery.

It took me many turns, countless nights of researching, and many divinely planned meetings with many people to put some of the pieces of this puzzle together and to figure out what steps to take.  It has been an ever changing path with each small encounter or information learned taking me a step closer to finding the right treatment for Alec.  I'm sure I will continue to learn more about ways to help treat autism.  I hope to compile all of these findings into a one stop place of resources, ideas, recipes for gluten free/ casein free cooking,  and natural living.

The first step in our new journey has been taking Alec to a DAN! doctor.  DAN! (Defeat Autism Now!) doctors are a group of doctors that believe autism is treatable and curable.  They believe that autism is a symptom of other things going on in the body.  Once we treat these underlying conditions we allow the body to heal.  Through this healing the body begins to function as it should and many, if not all, of the autistic traits will go away.  This type of treatment is called Biomedical treatment.  For now, biomedical treatment is not considered mainstream medicine, but I believe that like many alternative treatments in the past, in the not too distant future, it too will be seen as the correct treatment for autism by all medical professionals.

My plea to parents is not to give up.  In the beginning these types of treatments and diets can see difficult, time consuming, and overwhelming, but like all things in life we adjust.  It soon becomes second nature and life is not complicated.  Biomedical treatments can be very expensive since most insurances will not cover it, but there are resources and grants available.  You can find out more about them here.
